When you wish upon a star

It’s the last end credit scene I want the screen to be all black then you just hear Galactus say Herald I hunger and then a hand opens up and you see the Silver Surfer.

If that happened I think my head would explode but I can’t let that happen cause I need to stay alive for another 10 years to see this through

Seen’t It: Batman Ninja

You know what Batman is missing? A time travel romp in feudal Japan with giant robots and a couple of monkeys. Hey look at this someone read my mind! This week they had a fan showing of Batman Ninja complete with the cast and producers and director.  It was a great touch because Batman Ninja is on some shit.  You will be shaking your head with many questions by the end.

From Warner Bros.:

Batman Ninja takes a journey across the ages as Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine transports many of Batman’s worst enemies to feudal Japan – along with the Dark Knight and a few of his allies. The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land, with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. As his traditional high-tech weaponry is exhausted almost immediately, Batman must rely on his intellect and his allies – including Catwoman and the extended Bat-family – to restore order to the land, and return to present-day Gotham City.

At the fan event, someone asked screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima how in the world  they came up with this insane plot. He basically said he had the main premise of including time travel back to feudal Japan and then this concept got passed around and around until it became a megaburger; a hefty stacking of some wacky ideas. What else would you expect from the guys who’ve worked on Kill la Kill, Afro Samurai, and Gurren Lagann? That’s pretty much what this devolves into. Over the top insane action coupled with a bunch of huh moments.

Batman Ninja’s strongsuit are its visuals. Most scenes are done in a beautiful cel shaded 3D style. There are tons of details in Batman’s suit as well as the world around him. Takashi Okazaki (character designer) admitted that he packed this thing full of so many Easter eggs, that you’ll need to go frame by frame to pick up everything. Bold colors and scenes where the sky switches from flat color to a traditional Japanese paper print pattern really make this striking. Sometimes there will be a switch in art styles to encompass other Japanese art techniques. This is really a lush fusing of anime and Western visuals and is the best part of Batman Ninja. Even the designs for the Sengoku versions of the rogues gallery are eye catching and intricate. I half wished someone would pause the screening so I could run my eyes over every detail.

Depending on your tolerance for inanity, the plot is a bit wild and absurd. We start with a relatively straight traditional path of fight Joker get time machine. As we near the climactic battle however, they basically say eff logic and let’s throw in some monkeys (literally). Much like the giant mechs it transforms into a balls to the wall combo of wacky anime and a Batman battle. If you can shut off the part of your brain that asks “why” you’ll be treated to an over the top giant transforming castle robot fight and some other surprises that are a feast for the eyes.

Batman Ninja is an action packed wild ride that gets by on the richness of its style and over the top action. Go in expecting the craziest things you could think of and don’t worry too much about the plot and you should find this entertaining.

Seen’t It: Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare

Truth or Dare is another horror flick apparently aimed at the Snapchat generation. We’ve got horror character stereotypes, a demon, a love triangle and some twisted looking snapchat filters, all the perfect ingredients for a gruesome good ol’ time, right? On paper, yes, in execution not entirely.

Olivia (Lucy Hale) gets convinced by her best friend Markie (Violett Beane) to join the squad for their last spring break before life rips them apart. The group heads to Mexico and on their fateful last night they meet a seemingly chill stranger. This stranger lures them to a mystery location with the promise of clubbing and drinks. Instead of the club, they wind up at an abandoned mission and start a game of Truth or Dare. Unfortunately for the group this is not any old game, this is a game possessed by a demon with some twisted rules. You tell the truth or you die, you complete the dare or you die, refuse and you still die. They return home thinking nothing of this game until a seemingly accidental death and some hallucinations on Olivia’s part convinces them there is something more. They must play the game and learn how to defeat the demon before they all die.

ah shit I’m surrounded by demons aren’t I

The premise is interesting enough, but it takes a while for the pace to get moving. It feels like a lot of time passes by establishing the main flaw/desire of each character (foreshadowing!) Olivia and Markie get most of the attention as their relationship and history with each other drive the major plot points and tension. Everyone else is pretty two dimensional and just act as fodder for our body count. But we’re here to be scared we don’t want character development, right?! The scares are mild, most scenes lean on more of a creepy/squick factor. There are a few moments where you’re actually holding your breath waiting for the worst to happen but nothing genuinely terrifying. There is one scene in particular it’s quite obvious they expect you to be scared or disgusted but mostly everyone in my theater had the air of “annnnnnd….that’s it?” Having people’s faces change when the demon takes over though is a nice touch and definitely cringey every time you see it.

oooh I’m creepy

The ending had an unexpected twist and nicely paralleled with something mentioned at the beginning of the film. So while most of the flick felt like it plodded along a bit, the ending partially made up for it. Honestly, I left with a meh feeling but if you’re looking for a mildly entertaining flick without a heavy gore factor this may be for you.

Yo chief, I really need them stones, my dude.

Thanos is also getting new timbs, he gotta be extra saucy when he destroys the universe, #deadazz, #facts
